Om jobbet
Stillingsbeskrivelsen fra Natural Sciences - Institut for Fysik og Astronomi
Expected start date and duration of employment
This is a permanent position starting from 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Job description
- You will run and maintain ultra-high vacuum (UHV) beamlines at the ASTRID2 light source in collaboration with the Institute of Storage Ring Facilities (ISA).
- You will be the main responsible person of maintaining the AU-SGM4 beamline and end-station infrastructure for micro- and nano-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (nanoARPES) experiments, as well as contributing to the future developments of this capability
- You will contribute to user support and coordination of both internal and external users (including students doing projects at the beamline) during initial contact and feasibility discussions, during beamtimes and following up on data handling practices and analysis.
- You will be involved in commissioning tasks such as integration of the new APPLE-II undulator for polarization-resolved experiments
- You will help with infrastructure adjustments in general relating to the ARPES system itself and the connected systems, which include a glovebox, closed-cycle cryo cooler, UHV preparation chambers as well as a PHAROS Light Conversion femtosecond laser system.
- You will lead the development of control and analysis software solutions in relation to the above activities
Your profile
Applicants must hold a master in Physics or similar and are expected to document experience with
- angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy or similar techniques to probe excitations in solids
- use of synchrotron beamline facilities to investigate properties of matter
- a track record of designing, maintaining and applying UHV systems in the context of experimental physics
- handling of quantum materials, 2D materials or other types of solid-state systems in advanced modalities such as prototypical device architectures
Experiences with nanoscale angle-resolved photoemission (nanoARPES), femtosecond time-resolved (TR-)ARPES and with analysis of photoemission data resulting from such experiments are considered major advantages. A PhD in Physics is also considered an advantage.
The applicant is expected to be a team-player that is strongly motivated towards collaboration and able to compassionately work with and train students and users.
Who we are
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a department at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark. The main objectives of the Department are to carry out research at the highest international level, to offer research-based teaching at Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and PhD levels, and to exchange knowledge with other areas of society, e.g. by offering our expertise to industrial partners and the business world.
The Department is an attractive workplace for researchers, teachers, technicians, laboratory technicians and administrators and has a good study environment with many talented and active students at all levels. The research at the Department of Physics and Astronomy is of high quality, attracts significant international attention – in several fields the Department is within the world elite – and is characterized by many international collaborations with other high-ranking universities and research institutions around the world.
The Department uniquely contains the ASTRID2 light source, which is a third generation 580 MeV synchrotron running in top-up mode (see https://www.isa.au.dk/index.asp). The synchrotron consists of 6 beamlines that typically cover research themes such as atomic and molecular physics, catalysis, astrochemistry, surface science and quantum materials, giving rise to a highly collaborative, diverse and stimulating research environment.
What we offer
The successful candidate is offered:
- a well-developed research infrastructure, laboratories and access to shared equipment
- an exciting interdisciplinary environment with many national and international collaborators
- a work environment encouraging lively, open and critical discussion
- a work environment with close working relationships, networking and social activities
- a workplace characterised by professionalism, equality and a healthy work-life balance
