At the Department of Culture and Communication, the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, a position as assistant professor in the research project Infrastructuring the Public Sector’s Use of AI (IPA) is available from 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. It is a 3-years full-time position that includes both research and teaching activities.
The position is situated at Aalborg University's Copenhagen campus where it will be part of the Techno-Anthropology Lab.
JOB DESCRIPTION
For appointment as an assistant professor, the ideal candidate is expected to:
- conduct and publish research at a high-quality level contributing to the key aims and obligations of the IPA project. See the project description here.
- use the IPA project as a basis for developing a broader research agenda within STS, governance studies and infrastructure studies in collaboration with Professor Torben Elgaard Jensen (leader of the IPA project).
- have substantive experience with ethnographic research on the emerging organizational, societal and governmental responses to the current transformations of computational practices and digital infrastructures.
- have comprehensive knowledge of qualitative and quali-quantitative methodologies and research strategies for studying practices that are currently transformed, mediated or in other ways entangled with digital technologies.
- contribute to the broader set of research, outreach and knowledge brokering activities of the Algorithms, Data and Democracy project (ADD) of which the IPA project is part (see www.algoritmer.org).
- teach, supervise and examine students in Master of Data-driven Organizational Development, Master of IT and/or related programs that examine contemporary technological opportunities, challenges and concerns by means of SSH theory and methodology. The candidate must have a strong teaching record and should ideally also bring new pedagogical ideas to the programs.
- contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the overall activities and working environment of the Department of Culture and Communication.
In relation to research, the applicant is expected to document:
- Experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to deliver high-quality research.
- A research plan that harmonizes with the strategy of the Department of Culture and Communication and the aims of the IPA project.
- A research plan that attests to the applicant's ability to generate research products and projects that contribute to the Techno-Anthropology lab’s mission of developing an assemblage of timely, theoretically ambitious, experimental, engaged contributions to Science & Technology Studies and Infrastructure Studies.
- It is considered a plus if the candidate has experience with international collaboration, and they must have a publication record at the level of a coming assistant professor. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the search for external research funding.
- Previous experience with studies of AI governance in Denmark and/or other Nordic countries is considered a plus.
In relation to teaching, the applicant is expected to document:
- experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to provide high-level instruction within programs such as the Master in Data-driven Organizational Development or Master of IT, with various pedagogical considerations and approaches, including supervision, conducting seminars, lectures etc.
- At Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with this learning approach is therefore preferred but not a prerequisite.
The applicant is expected to document the ability to teach, supervise and assess both written and oral presentations in Danish. Alternatively, the ideal applicant is expected to acquire relevant linguistic competence within an agreed timeframe.
The Techno-Anthropology Lab has developed an engaged humanistic and social science research program that combines Science & Technology Studies, digital methodologies and interventionist practices. The lab works closely with external partners and is committed to develop knowledge products that contribute to socially responsible innovation. In continuation of this research agenda, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated how to empirically study and experimentally shape knowledge production and/or socio-technical innovation.
In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have solid cooperative abilities as well as the ability to create and maintain productive relationships with researchers of various research and cultural backgrounds. A national as well as an international network is preferred.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level, including an approved PhD thesis. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Salary and terms of employment
The employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (in Danish).
Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement) (only in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (only in Danish).
There is a mutual probationary period of 3 months for the position.
