Stillingsbeskrivelsen fra Aalborg Universitet

At the Center for Clinical Data Science (CLINDA), Department of Clinical Medicine, Aalborg University, we are looking for a full time postdoctoral researcher to join us in developing AI-based systems for clinical decision support in hospitals, starting December 1, 2026, or soon hereafter.

The duration of the position is two years, with the possibility of extension.

Subject

Clinical decision support systems can assist healthcare professionals in diagnosing and monitoring health conditions by integrating information from multiple sources, including clinical notes, laboratory and pathology results, imaging (e.g., X-ray, CT, MRI, and PET), clinical guidelines, and coding resources. Such systems can support clinical decision-making by helping clinicians synthesize heterogeneous clinical information and knowledge.

Your work tasks

The aim of the position is to explore and develop AI agent technologies that can assist healthcare experts in daily clinical problem solving, especially in deciding on the most appropriate next steps in the diagnostic pathway. A central task will be to develop an interactive framework based on large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques, capable of synthesizing information from the diverse data types, and further help interpret the findings in the context of individual patients’ profile and history. Important research questions include how to design the agent framework; how to represent, retrieve, and utilize information from the different data modalities to ground the system’s reasoning in clinical evidence; how to best incorporate human-in-the-loop (HITL) functionality so users can interact with the agent’s reasoning process; and how to enable forecasting and simulations over multiple time steps.

The project will be conducted in close collaboration with clinical partners, providing access to data-rich healthcare environments and established diagnostic workflows. One key partner is the Diagnostic Center (DC) in Farsø, Denmark. This setting offers a unique opportunity to develop and evaluate AI-based clinical decision support systems using real-world patient data from individuals undergoing diagnostic evaluation for serious conditions, including cancer and other complex diseases.

The position is based in the Clinical AI Group at the Center for Clinical Data Science (CLINDA), Aalborg University and Aalborg University hospital. The successful candidate will be working in close collaboration with healthcare domain experts from clinical departments at hospitals in the North Denmark Region, including Farsø DC.

Your competencies

We are looking for a motivated candidate with the following background, skills, and qualities:
•    A PhD in computer science or a related field.
•    Proven experience in machine learning, where experience in natural language processing (NLP) is highly desirable.
•    Experience or education in health data science or a health-related field is a plus.
•    Good Python programming skills to implement and prototype research ideas.
•    A solid mathematical foundation to support the design and analysis of algorithms and systems.
•    Curiosity, motivation, and the ability to communicate clearly.
•    An open and collaborative approach to working with health-domain experts, ensuring that research aligns with real-world needs.
•    Fluency in written and spoken English.
•    As the project will involve working with journal notes written in Danish, proficiency in Danish or another Scandinavian language is a plus, but not a requirement.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.
